SASANIAN KINGS. Jamasp, 497-499. Drachm (Silver, 28 mm, 4.10 g, 3 h), GD (Gay/Jay), RY 1 = AD 496. Draped bust of Jamasp to right, wearing a mural crown with a korymbos on top; behind head, ‘gʾm’ (abbreviation for ‘Jāmāsp’ in Pahlavi); before head, small bust of Ahura Mazdā to left, holding a wreath. Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, GD (‘Gay’ in Pahlavi). Göbl type I/1. SNS III/2, type Ia/1a. A beautifully toned and a particularly attractive example of this issue. Struck from slightly corroded dies and with light scratches, otherwise, about extremely fine.
